Scaling combs into the XUV

چکیده
■ ■ What are the motivations for working on extreme-ultraviolet technology today? The extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) spectral range is a largely unexplored frontier for high-resolution laser spectroscopy. Until very recently, no one thought it possible to have access to continuous-wave-like radiation in this spectral region. Now, with the convergence of ultrafast laser science, strongfield physics and precision measurements, it has become possible to venture into this region. This opens the door for new scientific opportunities in precision measurement, high-resolution spectroscopy and strongfield science. There are many simple atomic systems, such as H-like and He-like ions, which possess long-lived excitations of fundamental interest that exist only in the XUV region. We now have the ability to go after them. Furthermore, the possibility of using phase-stable XUV radiation to probe long-lived nuclear transitions and highly charged ion species, possibly for nextgeneration nuclear clocks, is truly exciting.

We address technical impediments to the generation of high-photon flux XUV frequency combs through cavity-enhanced high harmonic generation. These difficulties arise from mirror damage, cavity nonlinearity, the intracavity plasma generated during the HHG process, and imperfect phase-matching. By eliminating or minimizing each of these effects we have developed a system capable of generating > 2...
متن کاملA 1.8 mJ, picosecond Nd:YVO4 bounce amplifier pump front-end system for high-accuracy XUV-frequency comb spectroscopy
We present an 880 nm quasi-continuously pumped, grazing-incidence " bounce " amplifier system, capable of producing picosecond pulses (12 – 100 ps) and tailored pulse sequences at the mJ-level. More than 1.8 mJ of pulse energy was achieved for a 58 ps pulse, using sub-100 pJ seeding energy (up to a repetition rate of 300 Hz). Owing to saturation effects, the pulse-to-pulse energy fluctuations w...
متن کاملIntroduction to macroscopic power scaling principles for high-order harmonic generation
This tutorial presents an introduction to power scaling concepts for high-order harmonic generation (HHG) and attosecond pulse production. We present an overview of state-of-the-art HHG-based extreme ultraviolet (XUV) sources, followed by a brief introduction to basic principles underlying HHG and a detailed discussion of macroscopic effects and scaling principles. Particular emphasis is put on...
متن کاملFemtosecond-pulse-driven electron-excited extreme-ultraviolet lasers in Be-like ions.
A suggestion for the generation of extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) laser radiation based on tunneling ionization and subsequent electron excitation of Deltan not equal 0 transitions is described. The favorable scaling of the required intensity of the pump laser with the output XUV wavelength is compared with that exhibited by XUV lasers ased on Deltan = 0 transitions. Calculations for Be-like Ne pred...
متن کاملProgress toward a Soft X-ray Fel
The recent successes in operating FELs from the far infrared to the visible and near UV [1], together with a better understanding of the physics and technology of these systems, are leading us to explore again the possibility of using FELs to produce coherent radiation in the XUV region, at wavelength shorter than 100 nm . In this paper we derive a set of scaling laws, which we will use to stud...
